Where are the subs from?

From the only place that has all episodes: Crunchyroll. And Mori for the specials.

I remember when this show was airing, there was a lot of controversy over the translation quality of the subs.

That's true. Both sides did have a point. In some early episodes CR did go overboard with the liberal translations. However the Japanese lines were full of Japanese memes themslelves. Anyway I enjoyed the CR subs. And it's not like you have any other choices for episodes 09-12.

They’re both upscaled. Yours 720p to 1080p; the other 810p to 1080p. It actually has nothing to do with it, anyway. Putting aside the fact that the problem is the aliasing and oversharpening (I'm guessing the latter is caused by how you downscaled) and not the resolution, isn't your whole shtick that resolution doesn't matter? That's why you do everything at 720p, right?

No, I do everything in 720p because that gives me my optimal size/quality ratio.
