I don't know what's worse, making an awkward middle ground option when MiniMTBB makes better sense as the smaller alternative of MTBB or the sole usage of --variance-octile 1 that destroys this release's entire credibility

Lower octile number means more blocks get boosted. Using 1 means nearly every block is boosted whether it's necessary or not, that's certainly a choice.
