This project is a production with the goal of the smallest video size with moderate subjective compromises to image quality. This is not the hallmark of AV1, but close enough. Most people on this site use MPC. The issue is AV1. HEVC/10bit/x265 is the standard now. It'd be nice if these were done in that standard.

Although using the oldest technology might seem like the best idea, and I'm sure many people felt the same way until they found out, sometimes new technology does things older tech can't.

@enemyd, at this point, most people on the site probably use Plex or one of the better (and free) alternatives. Those who don't probably use VLC or MPV.

Also, the files played fine on MPC.

If you don't like AV1, you can download Handbrake and reencode to HEVC yourself. With the right settings, you won't lose any/much quality. It'll just take a while.

People getting free stuff shouldn't complain. If you don't like it, go pay for it.
