Video quality comparisons

I would like to take this opportunity to complain about HIDIVE audio:

Top is amazon audio, bottom is HIDIVE audio. HIDIVE uses 128k ffmpeg aac, which torpedos the audio quality compared even to something like CR (which also uses 128k AAC, but with a better encoder) and creates literal holes in the spectrogram. I recommend not watching HIDIVE or HIDIVE rips until they fix this.

Friends don't let friends use the ffmpeg AAC encoder.
Friends don't let enemies use the ffmpeg AAC encoder.
It's got a bad psycho-acoustical model due to licensing issues.
It's easy to bit-starve recordings. That's why you see those artifacts, the encoder is just nopeing out.
Whoever made the decision to use the ffmpeg AAC encoder is incompetent.

Also worth mentioning is that HIDIVE now also has 24 fps video instead of 23.976 so dupe frames are now present.

@LoliSub erm actually those subtitles are not translated, they are a transcription of what the characters are saying for deaf and hearing impaired people nerdge

ffmpeg aac is even awful at higher bitrates, sad that Hidive downgraded it.
Wakanim also used that in the past, even with 320kbps it was still worse than Crunchyroll with 128kbps (fdkaac).

I recommend not watching HIDIVE or HIDIVE rips until they fix this.

"Fixing" would mean that someone there knows what they're actually doing. Do you really have hopes if they can't even encode with the correct framerate?

after some testing, apparently the current ffmpeg aac encoder isn't as awful anymore. hidive is likely using a pretty old build

ffmpeg -loglevel quiet -i '[SubsPlease] Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai - 01 (1080p) [D98B8FB9].mkv' -map 0:a -t 0.1 -c copy -f rawvideo - shows they used Lavc58.134.100 which matches the version in ffmpeg 4.4.4
