Treasure Chest of Courage isn't really season 2. It's more of a collection of side material from the manga that couldn't fit in S1. I watched the first episode with CR, and I'll say that it's much better than what Funi did for S1. You could watch CR for it as-is and it'll be fine.

Yeah, consider S2 more like a set of OVAs for S1. So far, at least, it hasn't advanced the plot beyond the end of S1, but it has filled in some interesting side- and back-stories.
