even the r4 dvd subs aren't that great from what i understand. although the novel is finally getting an official TL so you could add the missing info to the subs if you knew what you were doing (if you're reading this, you probably don't).

Not that great but still better. I still wish someone will get over the English subs eventually, it's genuinely one of the few masterpieces and the groups still waste time after random ecchi/SoLs for some reason, instead of saving stuff like this. Perhaps it's just too hard for their translators.

Let's hope someone can give this a better release in 2023.

listen, I'm not a subs guy and don't have much knowledge on this show since I wanted to watch it spoiler free.
I thought these subs should be fine, turns out they're not.

I don't mind reuploading with better subs, but are there any subs better enough that justify it? UK-BD subs? Whichever @Interruptor said?
Make your thesis and we'll see.

Perhaps it’s just too hard for their translators.

yes, it's one of the harder anime to translate

The B/W BG in your first screen is full of chroma noise, and if you are hellbent on retaining artificial grain you added consider using --no-mbtree instead of something so pants on head as --ip-ratio 1.10.

The B/W BG in your first screen is full of chroma noise

It's there on the raw too

consider using --no-mbtree

Filesize was 2x bigger and quality didn't improve that much

The aliasing and upscale were part of the raw too. It's an artefact like any other. Also yes, you are supposed to use sane ip-ratio and pb-ratio when using --no-mbtree. Like 1.30 and 1.20 for stuff like this is the lowest you should probably go. This isn't a grainy source at all. Whatever.

EDIT: when tuning encode settings you should be using 2-pass anyway. Why tf would you like for like compare something that's double the size...

What the fuck are you talking about? The source has artificial grain, which still counts as grain.
I didn't just copy paste settings from someone else, I've done dozens of encoding tests

What the fuck are you talking about? The source has artificial grain, which still counts as grain.

The source having grain =/= being really grainy. You should know this. Something that is really grainy is a show such as Escaflowne. What's important here isn't the kind of grain or how it was introduced, but its coarseness and amount, when tuning encode settings. An ipratio that low just isnt sensible for something with such low amounts of grain. It's nice that you have done a couple dozen test encodes, I have a couple hundred under my belt myself, and seeing as you immediately default to assuming I'm accusing you of copying your settings, perhaps there is something there (jysze, for example, uses that setting for everything, even for Clannad for some reason). And the fact that you were comparing two different sized test encodes while tuning means your tuning method was not sound.

I didn't want to come across as antagonistic, I just wanted to give feedback so that your future encodes can be improved. The vitriol of your pre-edit comment makes me think that no matter what I say, you won't want to listen, so I'll just pretend this didn't happen. Feel free to forget I ever said anything.

edit: clannad wasn't som

JySzE used it for Clannad because he obviously used grain tune, and so did I. Grain ammount varies during the episode, but there's still a considerable ammount that I think it justified using it; I'd normally let ffmpeg set ip and pb ratio's automatically. There's another show I'm encoding and I did not use grain tune for that one. I didn't use it just because, besides the grainy nature of the video, it makes me type less arguments on my terminal. In addition, you can tell by looking at my psy-rd value that I understand what I did.

I'm sorry for my pre-edit comment, I didn't check your profile well enough. After a better look I changed it so I obviously don't think that way. I commit mistakes, I'm not perfect. (sorry for editing this comment a lot)

The fansubs are considered worse than the official R4 subs, but still better than the original streaming ones (those were full of silly mistakes). You are free to use these subs if you don't trust me, I will just (eventually) re-watch this show with [pog42] release instead.
