This show really got way more attention than it deserved during production. The story, the characters, and the world as a whole are as boring as they can possibly get while being outright bad in most instances. Even then, this is one of the rare cases when even a shit source can give you something quite decent if you throw enough money and time at it (another egregious case is Nichijou, but that show was actually a good one, the best kyoani has to offer after all these years).

I wish they could just stop adapting this and focus their efforts on better stuff, but if we follow Sturgeon's Law (which I do) 90% of anime is already shit.
Perhaps it's just an inevitability.

One thing that really pissed me off was the amount of effort the writer put to push the narrative that Rudeus is the way he is because he got bullied at school by one-dimensional evil bullies. This is called artificial empathy and I can't believe people fall for this. Rudeus didn't gain any organic respect, we were just shown worse characters destroying his mental well-being. I despise thins kind of writing and I never will support it. I still subscribe to the notion that good characters are written through subtlety (and this show had basically nothing about this, but that's what we get in the era of goldfish attention span, I guess).

Overall a very bad source material (I read the first novel, it's bad) elevated to the point where it becomes pretty decent because the pretty colors are just too good.

Also, I really liked the music. And the way they used the OP/ED to extend the amount of screentime, that was pretty smart and the best place to add world-building time.

I still hope they ax this shit though. Thanks, Bobby and unBased.
