74 Comparisons between the JPBD and ITBD
The differences in some comparisons are so big that I'd say the ITBD is from a different scan of the film. The title card is also in English, maybe that's a giveaway that it is a different scan? (It appears to have been made digitally though, so I'm not entirely sure.)
Thanks to scav for confirming that the ITBD does in fact come from a different source. I guess we'll just have to wait for a newly made scan if we want this movie to have closer to ideal picture quality.
Anyway, the ITBD beats the JPBD in detail and overall clarity of the picture by having better compression(& scan?), and by having the seemingly correct brightness during some scenes that, on the JPBD, have crushed blacks to such an extent that a lot of detail is lost. It also has (to my eyes at least) more accurate colors in shots where the JPBD has too much red, but also has a bit too much green compared to the JPBD in other shots.
The framing also varies a lot between the two. My first understanding is that the ITBD has bigger framing in the beginning/first half of the movie and the JPBD has overall bigger framing in the second half. Don't know if there's really a winner in that regard, depends on which half of the movie you like more I guess? :D
It also seems that shots like this in the legendary opening montage might be stretched out horizontally on the JPBD. If they are indeed stretched, then the slimmer versions on the ITBD must be the correct width & height.
In the audio/subtitle department we have an exhaustive amount of options: 5.1 and 2.0 mixes for both Japanese and English + a 5.1 mix for the Italian dub. I've also collected many differently styled subtitles to pick from, which should please anyone.

Are the English subs on the Italian BD different? The UK BD uses Edo for Ed.
I just checked and they use "Ed". Don't know if there are other differences though.

Like the US/UK/AU BDs, the IT BD is based on the transfer that was used for the Columbia/Sony DVD release from way back. Sony did some additional automated clean up for the Blu-ray materials, which unfortunately made some details disappear
The Sony transfer isn't bad for DVD-era, but as was common at the time a tad bit edge enhanced. It's less problematic than the Bandai BD overall I guess.
@scav So it is from a different source, gotcha. Thanks for confirming that! It might not look ideal, but I imagine this is be the best we'll get unless they do a new scan of the movie in the future.
Every time I come across the word "automated" regarding "cleaning up" or "enhancing" movies for Bluray, it always seems to have made the quality either marginally better or just worse lol. Get someone who loves these movies and knows what they're doing to work on them and we'd get better results imo. That'd be an ideal world though wouldn't it...

I checked the Japanese FLAC 2.0 (the Dolby Surround LPCM 2.0 compability track) of the JP BD. Left untouched, it's not in sync with the ITA BD video. By my estimation, it needs about 11600ms delay. I just used the A/V delay function of the mpv player... there's probably more accurate ways to determine how much milliseconds adjustments it needs for proper sync ^^;

Yeah I made sure I had the correct delays for the audio tracks by checking the differences in Audacity. The JP 2.0 needed a delay of about +11.679s.
