Here we have best version of Akira to date, the Italian Bluray, done by the genius compressionist mp3dom at Dynit. It rocks a very healthy bitrate at ~35.4Mbps with no pointless additional filtering or DNR. Can't really get better than this unless Dynit releases a 4K BD of their own.

Comparisons from caps-a-holic

The 4K BD is just dumb, the picture simply looks nasty when compared to the IT BD. The worst offender on it is definitely the bad (or lack thereof) moderation in applying DNR to "clean" the picture, ugh. The people working on these releases in Japan have a weird general philosophy when it comes to the way they choose to remaster older movies shot on film. They just love to meddle with the grain and in the process of trying to lessen/remove it, they usually end up ruining at least some of the fine detail. Akira's 4K release is no exception as you can see from the comparisons. Luckily we have people like mp3dom with a vastly different philosophy. Ok, rant over.

About the audio: the 2009 "Hypersonic mix" is not very good, too much revisionism on it compared to the original 5.1 remix & Dolby Surround remix. The 4K BD has a new 2020 remixed version of the Hypersonic mix, which is none the better IMO (and over 13Gb in size = extra bloat for just one bad track), so I didn't include either here. No one should be watching this movie with that kind of audio anyway. Other than that, because the original 1988 theatrical audio has not been included in any home release as of 2021, the Dolby Surround remix is the closest we've got to the original, if you care about that.

There are two different versions of the soundtrack included:

  • Original CD (USA version, but it's the same mastering as VDR-1532 only level shifted) (16bit 44.1Khz FLAC)
  • 2002 DVD-A 4.1ch (24bit 96Khz FLAC)

You can listen to the DVD-A tracks with just headphones or a 2.0 speaker setup by downmixing the channels, but you won't get the full intended experience, as it's best listened to with a full 4.1 setup. If you happen to have such a thing I wholly recommend giving it a try. The DVD-A also has extended versions of some songs, so it's good to have for the most complete OST, even if you don't have a fitting listening setup.

In addition to the considerable amount of tracks, I've collected the worthwhile extras from MangaUK's release:

  • 2 original Japanese TV commercials for Akira (1920x1080, 23.976fps)
  • 3 original Japanese trailers for Akira (1920x1080, 23.976fps, eng subs)
  • Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Akira Sound Clip mini documentary (720x480, 29.970fps interlaced, eng audio) (19min)
  • Interview with director Katsuhiro Otomo after the completion of Akira (720x480, 29.970fps interlaced, eng subs) (30min)
  • Full storyboard collage with music from the film (1920x1080, 23.976fps) (31min)
  • Full movie storyboard collection including shots that we're cut from the film

  4. English Animaze 5.1 FLAC

Subtitles:

  1. English - THORA (default) (.ass) (Misnamed, these are most likely some PGS subs converted to ASS. You can get THORA's subs from the DDL below)

Thanks, perfect info & wholeheartedly agree some revised or enhanced editions are a let down or disaster (Gunbuster DVD to BR for instance) rant agreed lol. As always best picture depends on set up & media :)
Happy to get the OST as I am one who loves a full audio set up for when it matters :)

Reminds me that I still need to make an updated version of the audio comparison. The 2020 Hypersonic remix is nasty.

@scav It's kinda funny but actually sad that the hypersonic mixes are supposed to be the "new and better" ones but they're worse than all the others AND over 13GB, just wasting space on the disc...

@glm8892, D-Z0N3's release is often considered the best, it's encoded from the Dynit Italian Blu-ray which is the best available source and what this release is. The UHD Blu-rays are all DNR'd and caused a lot of backgrounds to blur, the lines are cleaner(I prefer the gritty lines for Akira's aesthetic) but also seem overly processed leaving them looking kinda bad. You can get D-Z0N3's release here - https://nyaa.si/view/1284282 unless you hate grain then D-Z0N3/ITA BD are the best versions.

@sorrow, i prefer grain in classic animation.

This is a very nice version. I got so much Akira i downloaded though it's hard to keep up which is the best, i would need to sit down for a very long time and see each video of different releases, including the BluRay discs.

@gim8892, Trust me, this is the best Akira will ever look unless Dynit releases their own 4K version.

@coco1234, You can check the comparisons at caps-a-holic. IMO the 4K is not worth it because it has been digitally degrained, causing loss of detail and all the lines to look smeared. It might have somewhat better colors, but the ITBD used here is basically superior in every other way.

I will make an expansion pack for this that has DTS-HD MA surround tracks (for the Animaze dub and the 2001 DVD remix) which would work better for people with surround AVRs, the Dolby TrueHD Hypersonic remix, for the people who want it, and experimental FreeSurround FLAC 7.1 upmixes of the LaserDisc remix and the Streamline dub, which were originally both in Dolby Surround 2.0.
I will also include the DSD256 version of the Symphonic Suite.
As much as possible, I want hydes my compilation for this expansion up.

P.S: I noticed that this torrent is also missing the huge bonus features of the Criterion LaserDisc and the Pioneer 2001 DVD. I have them but I can't rip the DVDs since my new PC doesn't have a disc drive and I am going to have my old laptop (which has a DVD drive) up for repair next month.

@HARVEST, Sounds awesome! Wasn't aware that the LaserDisc had a remixed version of the audio, does it differ greatly from the other mixes? And yeah I don't have the Pioneer DVD, so I couldn't include the extras from it.

As much as possible, I want hydes my compilation for this expansion up.

@hydes What I mean by this is that the LaserDisc mix was apparently different from the theatrical audio mixes, but nobody knows what exactly are the differences and nobody has quite the proof. For all we know, the LaserDisc mix (home video Dolby Surround mix) is just the theatrical mix.
However, my LaserDisc mix and Streamline dub FLAC 7.1 mixes are upmixes (decoded the Dolby Surround tracks from 2.0 to 7.1) of the Dolby Surround tracks.
I can only do this for stereo audio so I haven't done this for the Animaze dub or the two 5.1 remixes.
FreeSurround can also decode up to 16.1, which is well beyond the usual 11.1 Dolby Atmos setup so when someone finally has a cracked version of the Dolby Media Producer Suite with Dolby Atmos, one can theoretically make a Dolby Atmos remix of AKIRA, one that is even more purist than the 2001 DVD remix or the 2009 Hypersonic remix. As well as a Dolby Atmos mix of the Streamline dub.

That said, the holy grail for AKIRA audio is the original 70mm six-track audio mix, which was most likely in 4.1, but there are some 70mm six-track mixes in 5.1 such as Apocalypse Now and Top Gun.
To this day, this 70mm six-track audio mix has never been released at all.

For surround audio (anything above 2.0), it's usually better to leave it as DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD as it's more compatible with AVRs than FLAC surround.
