Why is this in 720p? These blurays are HD upscales with a native resolution of 720p. Below are some comparison screenshots between the source and this encode. The encode screenshots were losslessly taken in mpv and scaled using scale=ewa_lanczossharp.

but muh placebo 1080p
very good release
no need for this since doki release, yamete kudasai.
@herkz
ikr I have nothing but 1080p. Might as well upload my 1080p version in the future. Those videos aren’t even that big for 720p. The audio is 111MiB which is ridiculous, meaning each video is about 200MiB each. Both seasons combined at 720p should be at least 25GB. Thanks, but I’ll pass.
I sure hope you didn't descale to 720p, because the vast, vast majority of this show isn't 720p native, but 716p. Very few scenes are actually 720p. Unless you're manually checking every scene or using my fancy descaling function, you probably fucked things up.
EDIT: quick glance, looks like just a blurry and starved downscale to me, so whew. Bullet dodged(?).
@LightArrowsEXE looking more into descaling, vapoursynth has much better tools than what I used. I'm definitely doing a v2 I didn't realize how much of a difference a proper descaling function made. I initially just used ffmpeg's scale filter. I largely just upload as a way to familiarize myself with encoding and various encoding tools as a side hobby. I appreciate the constructive feedback.
That's fine. I suggest checking out my descaling function for this, since you're gonna have to have it check for multiple resolutions. I've been encoding it as well to the side for a future release, so I've already figured out a bunch of stuff. So far it seems to be consistently 716/720p native scaled with bilinear, so something like this should work:
Just note that it'll be incredibly slow. You can pass it whatever upscaler you want, but the built-in one seems good enough. Personally I'm using a mixed nnedi3/FSRCNNX upscale, but that might be too advanced for you to write for now. Hope this helps!
it's 6-channel audio
wait, people actually use that to encode? i thought it was just a meme. even handbrake is better lol.
>handbrake, literal garbage and cluttered GUI frontend for ffmpeg
>better than ffmpeg
herkz pls, don't do this to me :(
10 bits? no thanks it's enough 8 bits in series where there's not as much movement or almost nothing as here
it's better because it at least has avisynth support. you can't do any real filtering if all you use is ffmpeg.
nice meme, but the benefit to 10-bit has nothing to do with "movement"
so the 1080p releases are really still upscales? finding any info about the original resolution of anything seems hard
@herkz It supposedly works with ffmpeg too, through a simple
-i script.avs, but why would you use AVS nowadays when you can run AVS filters in VS and pipe that straight to ffmpeg/x264?@valid Not as hard as you'd think. Anibin lists quite a few shows, and you can run tests yourself.
i assume if you're using ffmpeg to resize video with the built-in filters, you don't know anything about avisynth, so handbrake would be an upgrade
@herkz I have a base level familiarity with vapoursynth mainly just from my knowledge of python programming. I initially had used ffmpeg for scaling because I genuinely thought it didn't make a difference how you descaled something. Now looking more into it that was a really stupid assumption. I mainly just use ffmpeg as an x264 front-end last time I tried using x264 it created duplicate frames for some reason. I assume it was either something wrong with my distro's binary or something on my end. ffmpeg works fine though. I just wrote a bash wrapper script for ffmpeg and use that. I typically just pipe in vapoursynth scripts and it works fine.
it shouldn't matter for downscaling, but descaling is a different matter entirely. and, of course, there's way more to filtering anime than merely resizing video.
can't say i know about piping vapoursynth scripts into x264, but i know with avisynth how exactly you do it depends on a few variables.
the 10-bit stink looks terrible on smart panasonic and sony 4k from the first series that eagerly put 10 instead of 8 if you compare it there is no noticeable difference
Maybe by eye-level. Different if you compare specs though.
