The subs... are trash. Video looks great, but the subs are absolute garbage. Terrible grammar, overly literal translations, awkward phrasing. Did TOEI Japan wrote them?

yes, toei did the subs instead of CR. at least there's way better video for precure now since you can just turn off the subs and watch it.

Thankfully Serenae and anon will continue their releases for HG.

God, TOEI always have to ruin things in some way, don't they? Either with terrible CG, low budget, long recycled animations, and now terrible subtitles.

i mean toei is also responsible for the official subs for sailor moon crystal which are some of the worst official subs ever. it's not that surprising tbh.

And of course, they probably insisted on doing the subs, and they think they're doing great.

Probably because they want to be in control. Or they don't realize they suck at it. Or they don't care.

you have it backwards. they prohibit CR changing the subs because they did the subs.

That's my point. TOEI won't let anyone fix their subs. They always do that.

Sailor Moon Crystal had improved subtitles on Crunchyroll starting with episode 4 IIRC (it was also simulcast on niconico, but I'm not sure if the subs got improved there too or not). I think Crunchyroll had to wait for permission to improve the subs probably?

Discotek Media's first release of the 1980s Fist of the North Star anime movie (with characters between Kenshiro's legs on the cover) had very awful subs (much, much worse than SMC), which apparently was forced onto them. I wonder if that was an old Toei translation from the 1980s. The re-release (without anyone between Kenshiro's legs on the cover) had decent (or at least much better) English subs.

yeah CR eventually got permission to improve the subs, but they were still pretty awful
