[Tess] Kore ga Watashi no Goshujinsama - He is My Master [SDBD 720x480 AVC FLAC]

Saved on 2020-04-14 20:10:27. This copy includes the description and comments available at capture.

Description

An encode of ABR12's SDBD remux release.

Uploader Notes:
IVTC'd with QTGMC at settings TFF=True, Preset="Slower", FPSDivisor=2, SourceMatch=3, TR2=3, Lossless=2, Sharpness=0.2 and then decimated. Sentai's tacked on credits have been cut from the original source mainly because I find staring at a black and silent screen with white text for 45 seconds after every episode to be annoying and also because Sentai didn't bother telecining their credits meaning the show was at 24p but Sentai's credits were at 30p and as such they got cut. Typically NTSC DVD Widescreen is at a resolution of 704x480 this source is no exception, however, upon cropping I found that it resulted in some animation pixels on both the sides being cropped out due to the black bars on the side shifting between scenes. As such I opted to not crop and have left the SAR and DAR the same as the source at 40:33 and 20:11 respectively. Below are some screenshot companions of the source and this encode.

Field matching was something I considered the problem with field matching, specifically in vapoursynth, is the only built in filter for it is VIVTC. VFM is the field matching filter of it and it can't do any post processing. You can however write your own script to include post processing as the documentation mentions (http://www.vapoursynth.com/doc/plugins/vivtc.html#vivtc.VFM). But even using QTGMC as a post processor ends up leaving residual combing in some frames. QTGMC is high quality enough where the difference between field matching and just a full deinterlace is pretty minor quality wise. The very light sharping that I had QTGMC do also cleaned up a lot the edges compared to field matching. Here's some linked screenshots below comparing a field matched encode vs a QTGMC deinterlaced encode.

Edge cleaning
field matched: https://i.lensdump.com/i/iU1xjm.png
deinterlaced: https://i.lensdump.com/i/iU1bPP.png

Residual combing
field matched: https://i.lensdump.com/i/iU15Mo.png
deinterlaced: https://i.lensdump.com/i/iU1Gh9.png

Of course like any deinterlacer QTGMC does damage thinner lines it's noticeable within the fourth comparison screenshot in the description for example, but, I'd rather take that over residual combing and in most cases the damage to such lines is really only noticeable in a select amount of still frames. Of course TFM would do a much better job at this but I only use vapoursynth as avisynth dosen't play very nicely on Linux systems. I think stressing over it is pretty pedantic as the quality difference isn't all that massive in my opinion.

this encode doesnt look like an improvement to me.the jaggy lines are gross.
why were the black bars and AR not dealt with either?
also this should be red as its a re-encode

@tonikaku updated to be a remake. Usually I encode from full BDMVs not remuxes so I forgot to flag it as a remake. Thank you. Black bars were left uncropped because the black bars on the side shift between scenes meaning cropping the black bars on the top ends up cropping animation pixels on the side in some scenes, so DAR was left the same as source.

@Stultus Try a different video player can confirm these play fine on mpv.

@Tesseract This isn't a re-encode. It was encoded from the BDMV SD so this does not make this a re-encode. Likewise with any BD remuxes as it's still the m2ts file in a mkv container.

Re-encodes are only so when encoding a video that was already encoded previously. Like say I take your video of this (which was encoded form the Bluray remux) and encode it to a smaller size that'll make mine a re-encode.

As such I opted to not crop and have left the SAR and DAR the same as the source at 40:33 and 20:11 respectively

So the real resolution is 872 x 480p? Well more like 862 x 480p without the black bars. Either way is that even correct? Widescreen on DVD even with that thing should be 853 x 480p. Seems excessively wide. Can you inform further?

Here's a pic from KgOlve's DVD release.

@noZA_ Here's an example of what I mean the black bars on the sides are not even meaning setting the DAR to 16:9 results in animation pixels being cropped from the right hand side of the video below are some screenshots linked of what I mean.
16/9: https://i.lensdump.com/i/icGU40.png
20/11: https://i.lensdump.com/i/icGU40.png
The loss is only a few pixel rows but I would prefer to not lose any pixels especially when the crop isn't perfect either. The unevenness of the bars causes the left side to still have a bit of black bar left. It makes far more sense to just leave it as is because losing pixels for a shitty crop isn't worth it to me.
