It doesn't matter if it makes perfect sense, "fearful" and "fearsome" are completely different (and fearsome also fits in the context of making fun of him).

No. Japanese subs in said moment use word "おそるべき" (OSORUBEKI)

Japanese-English dictionary here: https://jisho.org/search/osorubeki clearly states that it should translates as:

  1. dreadful; terrible; horrible; deplorable​
  2. fearsome; formidable; awesome; redoubtable​

"Fearful" would be either "びくびく" (BIKUBIKU) either "おびえた" (OBIETA). Both means "fearful" as "Cowardly". "OSORUBEKI" here on the other hand means "Fierce", "ferocious" and so on. You know, this "Comically Serious" trope (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheComicallySerious?from=Main.Unfunny). Considering how exaggeratedly serious he acts with her.
Also you wouldn't think that people who makes this simple mistake should be trusted regarding English language?
