I'm pretty sure the combination of could/became here is grammatically incorrect. It sounds wrong to my ESL ears and contradicts the things I was taught in school. In this particular sentence, 'could' is past tense. So it should be followed by 'have become' later on. Or you could just use did/become instead - whichever sounds nicest to you.
