About the look, apparently is deliberate. For what I've read online, this anime was looking for an old-style feel. Of course, given the schedule and resources available, this is the best they got. I like it. After all, it's a special project to celebrate the 50 years of Ashita no Joe, an influential manga/anime of its time. And the show is really good.
