The young David Martinez and his mother, Gloria, barely make ends meet. Nevertheless, he has made it to the renowned Arasaka Academy – a school where essentially only the rich and powerful mingle. His mother toils day and night to make this path possible for him. Their life together is modest, sometimes even bleak, but they stay strong together.

But a single event tears David from this world: In a devastating car crash, he loses his mother. In the midst of despair, he comes across a dangerous “cyberware” – the Sandevistan, a military implant prosthesis that grants its bearer superhuman speed. David has it implanted, faces off against his arrogant classmates, and is expelled from the Academy as a result. A mountain of debt, loneliness, and hopelessness thereafter defines his everyday life.

Only the encounter with Lucy changes everything. She opens the door to a new life: the world of the Edgerunners – mercenaries, hackers, and outlaws who live in the shadow of Night City … and die. To pay off his debts, David joins a crew that unexpectedly becomes his second family. As the cyberware takes more and more from him, one question remains uncertain: How far can David go before he loses himself?
