BlackRabbit Encodes

BlackRabbit makes mini encodes that save storage without giving up solid quality. We pick the best available remux, preferably dual audio (Japanese + English), and encode it with Rabbit Encoder to AV1 video and Opus audio. Small files make the releases a good fit for automated setups like Sonarr.

We never re-time dialogue or cut content. We clean up and reorganize the tracks so every release is tidy and behaves correctly across players and media servers.

Below are our usual settings. Some releases need changes, and the settings table above always shows what this release used.

Video

• SVT-AV1-Essential at high quality and the slower speed.
• Rabbit Boost picks a CRF for every scene, so quality stays even across the whole episode.
• Black borders are cropped automatically. Only border area is removed.
• Sources with so much grain that it would bloat the file are denoised with NL4D first. Just enough of the measured grain is then added back to hide banding.

Audio

• Japanese and English only, Japanese first.
• Opus at 128 kbps for stereo, 256 kbps for 5.1, 384 kbps for 7.1 and 512 kbps for 7.1.4.
• Only the highest channel layout per language is kept.
• Commentary is removed. Uncensored and lossless sources are preferred.
• Delays are corrected and flags are set properly.

Subtitles

• Main dialogue uses Noto Sans (or Noto Serif for older shows) at 80 px, white with a black outline and shadow. Signs, songs, karaoke and other typesetting stay untouched.
• SRT is converted to ASS with the same style.
• Tracks are classified as Full, Signs & Songs, SDH, Honorifics, Commentary or Storyboards, even when the source labels are wrong.
• Fansubs are preferred over official subtitles. Picture subtitles (PGS) are dropped.
• Duplicates and unused fonts are removed. zlib is applied only when it saves at least 10%.
• Clean names like Full Subtitles [Group], correct flags, and ordering of English, Japanese, then other languages alphabetically.

Source Quality

File names are kept as Sonarr-compatible as possible. Our goal is mini AV1 encodes for as many anime as possible. When strong AV1 releases from other groups already exist, we generally recommend those.
